Sangiovese

Sangiovese is an important grape in Chianti and some of Italy's other great red wines but, in recent years it has come into its own as a stand-alone wine as well. Some Californian wineries also produce good Sangiovese.

Sangiovese wines typically taste like cherries or plums and have a nutty aroma. In fact, many Sangiovese wines have a nutty flavored undertone. Sangiovese wines are often high in tannin. This makes them especially good to enjoy with a good medium-rare steak. Sangiovese does not go well with nuts however, especially walnuts.

Sangiovese wines are very often used for blending with other types of wine. Winemakers are constantly experimenting with Sangiovese and often with some very good results.
