Sangiovese Grapes
Sangiovese grapes are black colored grapes that are widely grown in central Italy. Sangiovese grapes are sometimes referred to as Chianti Grapes because they are the main ingredient in Chianti Wines.Sangiovese grapes produce high grape yields and, although they do have a late ripening season, they perform best on well drained calcareous soils on southern facing hillsides. This makes Tuscany the perfect region for growing Sangiovese grapes. The quality of wine produced from Sangiovese grapes has improved dramatically since the 1980's and they are now some of the most sought after wines in the world today.
Sangiovese grapes have thin skins and a tendency to rot in dampness. This means that, these grapes do not mature well if planted too high. Although the hot dry climate of Tuscany is where Sangiovese grapes are best grown, Sangiovese grapes are also grown in other regions, such as California. Mcuh like Napa Merlot Wines, White Merlot Wines, and Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon Wines, Californian Sangiovese are very popular.
Sangiovese grapes produce wines that are fruity with moderate to high natural acidity. These wines are medium bodied, ranging from firm and elegant to assertive and robust. The aroma of wines made from Sangiovese grapes can be those of strawberry, blueberry, floral or plum and the finish can be slightly bitter.
