Riesling
Riesling grapes come from Germany, where they have been cultivated since the early 1400s. Rieslings are well known for their cellar longevity. In 1961, a 420 year old bottle of Riesling was tasted and had not yet perished. Rieslings are sometimes referred to as Rhine Rieslings or Johannesburg Rieslings. Rhine Rieslings are dry and Johannesburg Riesling are sweet.
Rieslings vary in flavor depending on the region the vineyards are located in and the processes used by each winery. However, Sweet Rieslings typically taste of apples, apricots or peaches. While Dry Rieslings typically taste of lemon and herbs or peaches. Both have a floral aroma which reminds of apples, rose petals and violets.
Riesling grapes come from Germany but are now grown all over to world with a fair amount of success. In particular, California has produced some excellent Rieslings. Washington and Oregon wineries has also done quite well. Other countries which produce fairly good Rieslings are South Africa, Australia, Italy, Russia and Chile.
