How to Make Spiced Wine

Spiced wine is one of those beverages that lends itself perfectly to sitting in front of a fire on a cold winter’s evening. It’s served hot and served in mugs. Traditionally called mulled wine or Gluwein in Germany where it is widely available in the fall and winter at open-air markets. It is easy to make and can be a nice alternative to brandy or eggnog.

To make spiced wine, you will need:

Large saucepan
Strainer or sieve
2 bottles of dry red wine (no need to spend a fortune on these bottles, the cheaper the better)
½ cup water
½ cup sugar
5 cinnamon sticks
5 whole cloves
1 lemon, sliced
1 orange, sliced

Place water, sugar, cinnamon sticks, and cloves in saucepan. Bring to boil and simmer for five to ten minutes. Add the wine and lemon and orange slices. Simmer for one hour. Strain fruit and spices and pour wine into cups. Serve hot with cinnamon sticks for stirring.
