Does a Wine have to Expensive to be Good?
As the editor-in-chief of this site I get more than my fair share of wine questions. One of the most common questions is, are expensive wines better than cheap wines. The short answer is yes. But, I don't recommend going out looking to buy a wine based on price alone.Wines range in price drastically, starting at only a few dollars and going well up into the hundreds. The thing to understand is that which wines you enjoy is a very subjective thing. Even a wine which cost you $300 could taste terrible to you.
Now, I'm not saying that all cheap wines are bad. In fact, many of favorite wines cost less than $10 a bottle and sometimes expensive wines are only expensive to enhance the wine's image.
The best advice I can give you is to try some of the cheaper wines and after you have found one you like, buy a more expensive bottle of the same type and see the difference. It's usually very noticeable. One of my favorite cheap wine white wines is Costello del Diablo (a Chardonnay). It costs about $12. But, when I spring for a $40-$60 bottle of Chardonnay, I can't even drink Costello del Diablo for a while.
